President's Report

Dear PMI OKC Chapter Members:

Thank you for your dedication to the profession of Project Management. The OKC chapter is a growing and dynamic chapter that has been fortunate to have a long history of volunteers who work as a team to support the membership. This summer two long-time Chapter volunteers have stepped down from their leadership roles making way for others to step forward. Please join me in extending a heart-felt thanks to Amber Wilson and Allison Bales for their years of volunteer effort in support of this chapter.

Several of you may have noticed some new types of events on the chapter website. In keeping with the diverse composition of the chapter and its geographic diversity, the leadership team is exploring hosting events in non-OKC locations such as Lawton, Enid, Midwest City, Norman and Guthrie. The events may be breakfast meetings, evening meetings or lunch meetings. The intent is to offer more members opportunities to network, attend professional development events, and form alliances with other members of special interest groups. If you are interested in volunteering to lead or host an event, please contact [email protected] or [email protected]

PMP Preparation and Study Groups. The Professional Development volunteers are working to provide a series of professional development events which will assist membership in preparing for the PMP exam. There is a large interest in study groups. If you are interested in leading or participating in a PMP study group, please notify [email protected]

The PMI Annual Dinner will be held on Thursday, 25 October 2018. Our featured speaker is Nathan Hart, Economic Development Director of the Cheyenne-Arapaho Nation of Oklahoma. I look forward to sharing additional details about the dinner as the date approaches.

Vice President's Article

Welcome to the New and Improved (ok, at least revived!) OKC Chapter Monthly Newsletter!

Have you wondered what happened to the excellent communications that used to be delivered to our in-boxes each month from the OKC Chapter?  Well, life happened and several very enegetic people had to move on to care of family or had to move.

I was feeling the loss of commiunications and finally started to reach out to see what I could do to help.

As an Electrical Engineer and Project Management Professional, I have discovered that my greatest shortcoming has been the inability to communicate effectively. 

In 2013 through 2016 I realized that something had to be done to keep relevelant in this fast moving environment.  So, what did I do?  I invested time and money in Dale Carnegie, a Neuro-linguistic Programmer (Remember Shari Alexander that came and spoke to our chapter a few years ago?).  This helped tremendously but still fell short of the mark.  I continued to feel the need for more.  I finally discovered Toastmasters and went about trying to find a club to go and visit.

I reached out to Toastmasters of Oklahoma and was met with a big welcome and a general interest in helping out. Long story short - I am two years into a young Toastmaster club (Aerospace Orators #5405001) in my company and have begun to develop and practice communication and leadership skills.

The personal growth in Leadership and Communications has helped to reinvigorate my career and about 30 of my closest new friends out of management, engineering, project managers and etc.

What about you?  You have studied hard, taken hard courses and distinguished yourself in your area of expertise.   But, can you communicate effectively?  Are you an effective leader?

We need more people to help shape our future in this chapter of PMI, our environment and our careers.

Take the time to stick your neck out and take a risk.  It is worth your time!

Are you a paid member of our chapter in good standing? ( Join or renew here!)  Are you able to dedicate a few hours each week to a meaningful volunteer role? Have you been searching for an opportunity that provides the opportunity to both networking, and professional development? 
If you answered yes, then you're in luck! You can add to your resume, learn new skills, make friends and professional connections, support emerging leaders in the local community, and more as a PMI-OKC board member. We are seeking applicants for the following featured positions:
Director of Professional Development Days – responsible for coordinating the speaker(s)/ curriculum, and schedule for PD days. This includes creating the schedule, creating a communications plan, and working with Marketing for promotional tools.

Director of Training and Certification – responsible for managing the training program for project management certifications. This includes securing and maintaining a list of certified instructors for each certification/class, working with the Director of Events to coordinate the logistics, verifying attendance/completers to send to VP-Membership for PDU submission.

Volunteer Instructors – Members with PMP, PgMP, PfMP, and/or ACP certifications are needed to teach chapter PM Fundamentals, PMP Bootcamps, ACP, and PgMP certification classes throughout the year. This is a fabulous opportunity to support other professionals in obtaining their certification and to participate in the Continuing Certification Requirements Program of Giving Back through volunteering.
