Topic: Stakeholder Integration

Most, if not all, project management publications identify stakeholder management as a key element in the project management lifecycle, stating that it is critical to the successful delivery of any project. Although I agree that stakeholders play a critical role, I prefer to say we need to integrate our stakeholders versus manage them. I have researched the definition of the term ‘management’, using several well respected reference books, such as Merriam Webster and Oxford dictionaries. In all cases, the definition describes the term ‘management’ as the act of controlling or directing and making decisions. While some projects may warrant this type of oversight, my experience suggests that project managers can be more successful as facilitators and not dictators. The word ‘management’ implies the project manager has more power than they should have, in some cases. Since the outcomes of the project impact the stakeholders, those individuals should be integrated into the project activities and decision making throughout the lifecycle of the project. This ensures successful completion and sustainability.

During this session, we will go beyond the text book explanations of stakeholder management. We will explore the relationships between the stakeholders and the project manager, in addition several elements needed to support successful delivery. These include:

·       Sponsorship

·       Stakeholder identification

·       Engagement, interaction, communication, etc.

·       Relationships and influence

·       Alignment

·       Expectations

·       and more…

I will share some personal stories of my experiences and invite you to be prepared to do the same. As project managers, I believe our purpose is to ‘facilitate’ the delivery of initiatives rather than ‘drive’ them. Your experience may suggest a different approach and I would love to hear about it.
